Castra Martis is a Roman fortress in present-day Northwest Bulgaria, of which impressive ruins have survived to present days. It consists of two independent fortifications. A magnificent bastion, a fragment of one of the fortifications rises at the centre of the town of Kula, which came into being, among its remains, during the Ottoman era and which was the reason for its name. The Hungarian traveller and archaeologist Felix Kanitz, who studied those places in the 70s of 19th century, was the first to localize there the Roman military post Castra Martis.
The objective of this project is to preserve it through conservation and restoration works, to improve the infrastructure, to ensure accessible environment for people with specific needs, and to socialize the fortress as a cultural tourism landmark.
