The Boyana Church of St. Nicholai and St. Panteleimon is located in the Boyana, a Sofia suburb, at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain. It is one of the cultural symbols of Bulgaria. In 1979 it was included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List as an immovable cultural heritage. The church is richly decorated with mural paintings, which are the main reason for the extreme interest shown by researches towards it. The Boyana Church owes its popularity most of all to the mural paintings of 1259, which are indicative of the phenomenal achievements of the Bulgarian Medieval Art. The majority of over 240 images are distinguished by individuality, convincing psychological characteristics and vitality.
The Boyana Church is one of the most visited cultural landmarks in Bulgaria, which requires considerable permanent care for its preservation and proper presentation as national and world heritage. In this regard Sozopol Foundation is developing this project, which envisages rehabilitation and layout of the surroundings of the church – the park, its fence, as well as reconstruction of the building in the park, next to its entrance, which are in a poor condition – in accordance with the recent requirements for cultural tourism.
In the course of implementation of the project, sample archaeological surveys might be conducted in some sections of the park, which have not been done so far. The aim of such surveys is to look for structures that could help further clarification of the function of the church and ensure accessible environment for people with specific needs.
