Hisarya (Diocletianopolis) – the town of emperors

Hisarya is a town in Southern Bulgaria with a thermal field of 22 springs located on a small area, having different physical and chemical characteristics and temperature, with proved healing qualities that were used early back in the ancient times. In more recent times (1882), it marked the onset of organized balneotherapy in Bulgaria. There are beautiful parks within the town, with rare plant varieties from all corners of the world and also a belt of mixed deciduous and coniferous woods, with many leisure places.

After the conquest of the Province of Thrace by the Romans in 46, a large Roman settlement appeared around the springs. In 293, the Emperor Diocletian gave it the status of a town and that was the beginning of its fortification with thick walls and of the implementation of new solutions for development of the town. For its well-preserved and genuine fortification system and architecture, the Roman town of Diocletianopol occupies one of the first positions in Europe and it can rightfully be called a town of the Roman emperors.

The project envisages reinforcement of the eastern octangular tower of the fortress wall of Diocletianopol through architectural conservation and restoration, as well as of sectors of the wall around it, which are in a very bad condition. It contemplates also the installation of impressive lighting, construction of pertaining infrastructure, and provision of accessible environment for people with specific needs.
